Why the base matters more than the paver
A paver is only as stable as what sits beneath it. In San Diego’s expansive adobe clay, we excavate to the depth the use demands — deeper for a driveway than a patio — then build up compacted Class II road base in lifts, compacting each layer with a plate compactor. A bedding layer of sand is screeded flat, pavers are laid tight, edges are locked with a concrete or spiked restraint, and polymeric sand is swept into the joints and set.
Skip any of those steps and you get the sunken, wavy driveways you see all over older neighborhoods. Our approach is the reason our surfaces stay flat through the soil movement that our seasons put them through.

Travertine stays cooler underfoot around pools, tumbled pavers give an old-world courtyard feel, and large-format smooth pavers read modern for contemporary homes. Choosing Your Paver Material, Pattern, and Finish
Once the base is right, the material and pattern are where a paver project gets its personality. Concrete pavers are the versatile, cost-effective workhorse and come in every color and shape. Travertine stays noticeably cooler underfoot — the reason it is a favorite around pools — and brings an old-world, natural-stone look. Porcelain pavers read clean and modern, resist stains, and hold their color, while tumbled pavers give a weathered, courtyard feel. We help you match the material to your home’s architecture, how the surface will be used, and your budget.
Pattern matters more than people expect. A 45-degree herringbone interlocks tightly and is the strongest choice for a driveway carrying vehicle loads; running bond and ashlar patterns suit patios and walkways; and a contrasting border or soldier course frames the field and sharpens the whole installation. On pool decks we add non-slip finishes and cool-to-the-touch materials for safety and comfort.
Sealing is the final decision. It is optional, but on high-use patios and pool decks it deepens color, makes cleanup easier, resists stains, and helps stabilize the joint sand. We walk you through whether to seal at installation or later, and how the choice affects maintenance and traction — a real consideration on commercial walkways.
